People here still like to see and check the goods for themselves before making a decision. Thats changing slowly, but credit cards remain a no-no for most. Most of the people prefer hard cash for various reasons.
Again the gray market scores a lot due to more taxes on the actual market. Cell , phones all electronics are available without any guarantee in the grey market which cost significantly less. A major benefit is that these goods work great and hence people prefer going in for them too.
Internet penetration as well as tendency of the people to use credit cards must be encourages before Ecommerce can properly kick off. Some major Indian portals:
naukri.com
indiatimes.com
rediff.com
lots others, these come to the mind right now.
If you are an AdWords advertiser, I would recommend de-selecting India from the country list.
ECom is restricted to groceries, books (priced in Rupees only) and music (again, the prices should be in the local currency). People generally don't buy software here. Buying stuff with USD pricing is rare.
If you count overall internet usage vis a vis people buying online.
It's pretty low, However if you are looking total number of credit card holders it could well be in millions. This meaning total number of people who can buy online and would be willing to spend would be close to millions with proper education.
This number of millions is pretty miniscule compared to 1 billion population but however good for a try.
If someway your ads are only displayed to home pc's not cyber cafe's then it's a quality market, my assumption is that those who can own PC generally be able to manage a credit card, hence a large chunk of quality market is suddenly exposed to online world.
What spoils internet in india is the cyber cafe's where large number of people just generally chat and browse , I don't think anyone buys from cyber cafe's.This for ecomm is damaging I hope indian IT sees this and provides Cyber Cafe's IP's.Which as an Advertiser I can block.
If I am an advertiser I would like to block not entire India but thee cyber cafe's.
Unfortunately this IP's list is not available as yet hence we need to block ad's appearing in india.
If this cannot be done then Regional Targeting would be great like US.All Metropolis (New Delhi,Chennai, Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Pune)including would be better for Ecomm then whole of India.

Ps: Dating and Marriage's are a major Ecomm oflate in india.
There are lot of BPO companies which do backoffice Internet marketing for US clients.Including mine :)
Exactly , IMO none of the major portals or ecom site's make money from indians living in india :) ...The only viable indian demographic for online ventures are the NRI's (oversees indian expats)
And the possible things to sell to NRI's are phone cards, money transfer services/banks, gifts to india , flight tickets and offcourse dating /matrimony services (which i heard are quite succesfull :)
