Then, playing around with my site, I noticed my search index had gone AWOL. (it's a largish site and I have my own indexing solution). Gone, disappeared, departed to pastures new. (I haven't traced the cause, but presume my own script has borked up at some point). So no search results. Aha - the logs. Could it be? Yes. The number of (failed) searches approximated to the number of "missing" AdSense impressions.
Doh. Phew. Now all I have to do is get the index recreated, and ponder over what lessons this has for me (keep a recent index backup on site; and better use of AdSense channels for a start).
It's a rollercoaster life in the AdSense Army ;-)
Hello Houston... we have a problem
(Since when did Veterans Day become a major holiday? Nothing happened in our town, not even a parade.)
I am just so mad about this. VPS is suppose to be better than hosting and we pay 3 times as much for it. Tech support said, "Oh, I don't know what the problem is, I'll send in a ticket.
So, anyway our Adsense was way off. (Now I understand Brett felt when Chicago went offline.)
Server reliabilty is a huge factor, and when chosing one, way back, it was reliability that was the key reason for chosing this one.
It means we don't have all the bells and whistles available to us that other servers offer. But, back when we had those bells and whistles on another server, complete with data base and cgi bins, and I hand coded pages, we didn't make much money. It was not because they were down all the time, though they were. But, instead because we took long too long to hand code pages, repair bad code, and update the code.
Since the whole idea of having a business on the web is to make money, when we chose a new server, we chose one that was reliable, and then learned to work around and do without the bells and whistles.
I think much like the black belt in Karate. He knows he can do it if he needs to, and knowing that, is enough. He has nothing to prove to anyone, he has proven to himself everything that is important. That is all that matters.
Lucky I am a stats addict, I usually check my sites first and then check adsense.
That day I checked adsense first and was horrified at what I saw! I Google my keyword, seen no position shift and went directly to the site to check it out. No site in sight. :)
I apparently caught it before it had been off too long but it was still an estimated 12 hours before my son could get a new server set up and put our sites up so they would at least be earning ad income while all the scripts, etc was adjusted for the new one.
Like I said, just another bright day in the neighborhood :)
Anyway, search has been back up for almost a full day now and all figures are returning to acceptable (if not scintillating - I'm going to have to cancel the order for the Ferarri again) levels.
