Does you have to have a forum in order to make decent $?

How many of you have forums and how many doesn’t?

I have been advised that forum is needed make extra or bonus money from adsense, affiliates, etc. Or just generally to bring punters and, and to make them comeback to your site.

I know there are other attributes and positive characteristics a site have to have to be successful. But as far as a forum goes, is it a bonus to have one or not?

Any of you doesn’t have a forum yet make decent $?

You definitely don't need a forum to make money.

In fact, most people tend to agree that forums perform really bad.

How i see it, a forum can bring a community, a community who is has something to come back to on the site, then perhaps purchase something from an affiliate or click ads.

however, without a forum, how can you make people come back to your site when they have read all your articles, then check back every 2 weeks to read your other 5 articles u just added during that weeks, then disappear for another 2 weeks.

I'm interested to know weather people here rely on a forum or perfume better without one.

How about adding a blog to your site? I know very little about blogs yet, so am just wondering.

I don't have a forum (yet) but am a moderator on a couple. They are an excellent way to build a community atmosphere into your sites and help your site grow by itself dut to the content input by the forum members.

Adsense wise, forums apparently do not do that well, but in most cases, the added site traffic and word of mouth referrals balance out in future benefits.

Interesting unique content that people cannot find elsewhere. All you need for at least 2 or 3 thousand dollars a month.

But writing for the sake of it wont do it. You need some real info about something people want and cannot get elsewhere!

Well a blog also gives your users something to comeback to, similar to a forum. Since the users can participate in the article you posted, by them a comment.

But im yet to know whether it’s a bonus to have that user participation or not.

I rather not have a forum, to use my time looking after the forum elsewhere, but if its going to bring in more $, i have noce choice.

If people convince people that forum is not that big of a bonus, then i will forget about it.

I have a new site, so i want to know weather should i take that path or not.

I have forums on my site, although the forum itself dosent bring in much money, compared to the portal.

Its great to have a community, and once you find good people to moderate it (could try 'poaching' active members from other forums while starting out ;) ), it dosent require too much work...

Ive been running forums for 3 years now, from PHPBB to vBulletin, my problem is that the forums i have are very very low paying keyword forums, the CTR is under 1%, but Adsense bring attention of advertisers who contact me and ask if they can advertise on my site, right now im completing a deal worth 6000$ for a one year banner on one of my forums.

I spent $10 on adword targeting a forum site that is about my niche, never received a single click!

I am not sure that the forum is the best use of my time and energy, but I get reasonable ad performance (it's more of a knowledge base than a discussion forum, which helps) and it seems to help generate traffic to other parts of the site.

Assuming you can get people to actually post in it, having a forum is like getting free content for your site.

Very low quality content, but content nonetheless.

Having a blog on the other hand is... kind of like a teardrop in the ocean these days.

I know they are supposed to be the latest thing and all, but I think this is going to be a shortlived fad.

Is it a blog? Or do you have anything else that allows user input and/or interaction?

I'm really with the idea of not having a forum/blog and I'm somewhat convinced that I don't want it at all, takes too much of my time and energy.

But I keep thinking I'd be missing out if I didn't have one.
