I've had an approach from somebody who is an adwords advertiser who want's to discuss the possibility of advertising direct on my site. So far I've only used Adsense, Fastclick and Chitika (please change the name - I can't get that darned "Chiquitita" song by Abba out of my head all day after logging on) to monetise my site, so this is uncharted territory for me. The book he's promoting fits in exactly with my site, and I think I'd do very well out of this deal, so am keen to be involved.
However, the last thing I want to do is get booted from Adsense. Am I correct in thinking that if an advertiser approaches me, then it's OK with Adsense for me to carry his ads direct?
Added in: We are approached all the time by potential advertisers, with Geotargetting and everything else it would be impossible to find out if they use AdSense as a marketing tool.
The way I see it is if they contact you directly go for it.

I had a similar situation a while ago and I discussed it in this forum (but somehow that message disappeared during the WebmasterWorld server problems). ASA answered in that thread and even had a look at my website to confirm that showing a non contextual ad from an advertiser in such a situation is well within the TOS.
Hope it helps!
As long as the advertiser contacted you first, you have no problem. We have several advertisers who submit their ads for placement in our site and they appear in the Adsense ads. too. We have had no problems.
It is different if you contact them and offer your space. They can send your offer to Google and they can prove that you made the offer. That is the other story.

I am aware that the ad itself will meet the Google TOS, but there still is in my mind a nagging doubt about the advertiser using adwords as well. However, I have an email that states that they approached other sites as well as me. So I can always throw that at them if there is a query - and I don't really expect there to BE a query.
