how long before they appear

I am testing one of my pages with image ads only - size 300x250. I have updated code yesterday, still no image ads show - only expended text ad shows all the time.

How long before I see image ad? I understand that this will display text ad if there is no image ad available, but I haven't seen single image ad.

In my experience, the image ad inventory is pretty thin.

Have you seen any image ads for your market on other sites (competitors)?

Pretty thin? - as in Non-existant?

I think I'll give it untill the end of the day - if nothing shows will have to switch back to text ads. I will also check the competitors sites for this type of ad. I can't seem to believe that there would be a lack of image ads in this category.

How about pretty thin to non-existant in some markets.

non-existant? - Wow, that's too bad. I was looking forward to seeing some image ads. Hmmm....

I've found that for my area (books) there are few image ads (though this has more to do with the poor selection of ads and low ppc for the entire category than anything else). What I have noticed is that the image ads are higher quality than the text ads and therefore generate more clicks.

miedmark -

Image ads are still a pretty new feature, so for certain topics we may have a limited inventory of image ads. When there are no available image ads and you've opted in to image ads only, you may see PSAs.

We therefore recommend opting in to display both text and image ads in each of your ad units. In this way, the largest possible pool of advertisers will be competing to display on your site. If our technology calculates that a text ad represents more revenue potential for you, that's what will show. On the other hand, image ads will display when those represent the best revenue potential for your site.

Thank you ASA.

Yes, PSAs started showing and I have switched back to text ads.

The reason for trying out image ads was that with text ads targetting has been very out of place lately (CTR has dropped dramatically because of that of course).

I have been with adsense for maybe 6 months and have never had this problem before - ads were always well targeted and CTR "was" good as well.

it depends on what your content is on, for example if it is about websites/webhosting...there is lots of image ads on that.

If targeting was bad with text ads, why would it be any better with image ads? I think there's a problem with the premise behind your actions....

As I mentioned before - ads were always very nicely targeted (dead on) for last 6 months.

why would targetting be any better with image ads?

Good point. I don't know why, wanted to try image ads. I'm running out of options here

I was unaware that you could have image ads only. I thought it was either text ads only or text and image ads together.

I checked again and I don't have an option for image ads only.

Yes, the option is there. Just test it first make sure you can get image ads in your topic.

Image ads are still a pretty new feature, so for certain topics we may have a limited inventory of image ads.

well, there can be no talk of a pretty new feature, since image ads should exist for more than a year by now, don't they?
in my opinion, the problem is the whole concept, especially the payment for image ads.
why doesn't googgle realize, that image ads require a different accounting method than text ads?

look, image ads have a big advantage for the advertiser. it's the mere visual appearance in our ad spots called branding. high memory value - nothing else than a print ad. and now take it further and imagine a cute little flash film. if the user clicks, it's nice, but it's not required by all means to pay off for the advertiser.
obviously, this branding effect is not charged. like most of the other webmasters in here, i couldn't notice an income increase by letting image ads appear in my ad space and destroy my web design.
and as far as targeting is concerned, i also wonder, why they should do any better than conventional text ads.
strangely enough, advertisers are also not positive about image ads, maybe in response to the lack of interest across the board.

so my question: are image ads partly balanced in cpc? if so, i would keep my hands off in any case. if not, payment for blending them has to be fundamentally higher as yet.
branding for free? you can count me out!

You might try section targeting.

It can work to better focus a page or refocus it. I have an Adlinks box on my home page, which has links to all the areas of my site and various small chunks of text. Targeting was decent but not great--typically 1 of 4 or even 2 of 4 links would be somewhat off-topic.

Last week I went through the page, marked one section to ignore and two to emphasize, and I'm much happier with what I'm seeing. And CTR and income for the page is up too, more to the point.
