Building a site for Adsense? Do I need to keep on topic?

The site I am building will have an aim - to sell my service.

Secondly, the ads are there to generate income.

Is a 'pyramid' site looked poorly at by Google etc? Ie I want a site that, at the top, sells my service, but in subdirectories containes mini sites that are about totally unrelated topics that I am interested in (or even not, in some cases).

My site will look good and work properly and will deliver relevent information. To be honest I'm looking for high SERPS first, and then conversion of adverts.

I know you guys have been here before - any advice?

sandpetra, I'm confused...two hours ago you wrote:

I am a seo'er, so I'm used to targeting sites to deliver relevent content for a visitor

If you're an seo'er then how come you don't know about:

Is a 'pyramid' site looked poorly at by Google etc?

I need to work...!

Optirex - I work for a number of clients - all my seo work has been done specifically for them - on topic!

I've never built a site for myself (until now).

I'm currently getting good results in the loans and finance area for SEO stuff and yes, of course i know that sh*t scraper sites or the like will get penalised - I'm asking if anyone has built a successful pyramid site using good content over years not days!

I'm planning to give it a try and do it proper - all I mean to ask is there room for properly constructed pyramid sites?

Anyway - i dont pretend to know more than anyone here - but I think i have a way of building a pyramid site while keeping to my core service and keeping a limited run of relevenc e through every part of the pyramid.

Am I fooling myself? I've never been penalised by any of the search engines....

What is a pyramid site?

The next point is, when Your current business is SEO, You will find Your business very boring after AdSense brings a nice income.

It sounds real dodgy calling it a pyramid site however I assume you are basically referring to an all-encompassing directory site with several/many different subjects?

I know there are several here who have done that successfully however the recent Jagger update seems to have eliminated some of the scraper-type of directory sites.

Mine, which are all niche trade sites, have not been affected since they have exclusive, authoratative and relevant content.

If I were to consider a site such as you suggest I would construct them under different urls with links to each site's specific subject.

This would give you a better spread and also better damage limitation if something ever went amiss with the Google algo...and, of course, that never happens!

Some would disagree with my method however I am finding great success in employing the core mega site with satellites connecting to it.

Of course, my core mega site existed long before Adsense therefore a good idea could possibly be a core directory site containing brief but pertinent information about each subject with links to all the specific, more in-depth satellite sites.

Both should rank equally well in the SE's so long as the snippet information were to be recognisibly different.

This, in reality, would be like a hand-made scraper site as opposed to a machine built one, your advantage being that your knowledge and presentation would make it unique.

The beauty of it would also be that the basic core directory site would be relatively simple to construct once you had decided upon the initial subjects.

I hope you've got plenty of time since you're going to need it to build all those pages! Are you considering going head-to-head with something like Wikipedia or a specific trade/sport/whatever site?
