Does adsense work on blogs?

I've just started a blog on my site's topic. Not for the purpose of Adsense, but because blogging is an area I haven't really looked into.

Anyhoooo, I slapped a banner on there to see what happened. Ads seem targetted not too badly, and seem to change depending on what the page currently mainly discusses. Do people here with well visited blogs find that adsense works well for them, or do people usually use other means of monetising blogs?

On a side issue, I know it's a new blog, and I'm knew to blogging. How does one go about promoting a blog for more traffic?

The same rules apply as with other kinds of website. Traffic is paramount. Blogs devoted to navel-gazing won't do well, but those devoted to a focused niche can generate good clicks. If you blog on a wide range of topics, your targeting might suffer at times.

Send a ping to services like Ping-o-matic after every post, and be sure Technorati is indexing your blog (if they're not, drop them a line). Claim your blog at Technorati, and add a photo to your indexed posts. Tag or categorize all of your posts (if you're using Blogger, you'll have to do it manually). Submit to all the minor blog search engines you can find. Also, make meaningful comments on other blogs--especially those on complementary topics.

As always, experiment with ad size and placement. Your main page and post pages might require different ad layouts.
