Sorry if I posted this before. And I think I have but I just dont' see my post. I think it might be out there but hidden because of breach of TOS. So I am trying again and rewording the message.

I am the author of an ActiveX control and C++ library that is used to communicate to a specific piece of equipment. So my market is going to be fairly limited. I just started using adwords a view days ago. Considering the specific nature of my product, how long should it take till I start seeing clicks?

I realize this one might be a bit hard to answer but maybe someone has experience with a similar situation and might have some idea.

Clicks are dependent upon so many factors and here's a quick summary:

What about your keywords: Have you spent valuable time choosing the best range of keywords and keyphrases? This is one of your best areas for opportunity.

How appealing is your ad? If you were looking for those services yourself, does your ad compel you to explore? Think out of the box and make the ad stand out. Write it once, test it and test it again, and again...

What sort of numbers are your talking about? Small vertical markets may not have high impressions but, obviously, the more impressions you can achieve it will raise your opportunity for a clicks. More impressions does not automatically translate into more clicks.

Where is your ad posistioned? Are there dozens of other advertisers vying for the same space? You may have to pay more to achieve a better positioning - but that is not always the case: See the appealing ad above.

Finally, don't sit back and expect immediate results: Work on the ad and test different campaigns for effectiveness, test again and re-test again. It is not an exact science.

Thanks all good points to think of.

I actually did spend a lot of time thinking about the keywords. As I said my product is used with a very common piece of equipment and a popular manufacturer. Say for exanple my product is a "widget control" and the manufacturer is "xyz company". At first I had keywords such as "widget" and "xyz company" this caused my CTR to deop because people were searching on "xyz company" or "widget" but not really interested in a "widget control".
That is fair. What I think is unfair is that when I search on Google with "widget control xyz company" , a ton of ads appear for widgets and equipment from xyz company, with my ad lower on the list. I am told that as people start to click through on my ad my ranking will rise so that my ad will not get as lost in the other ads.

It still would be nice to have an idea when I should start getting some clicks.

If your ad is appearing you have every chance to get clicks immediately.
