Adwords and Top Google Position

Does it make sense to have both?

Currently I have a great position in google for a particular keyword. I noticed that some of my competitors that also have good, free positions are also advertising in adwords for the same exact keyword. Does this make sense? What is the reasoning behind this?

Look carefully at their adword text? Maybe it qualifies traffic even better? Either way - if you lose your #1 in the free serps... you want a backup?/////

yeah, of course I want a backup, but I can always implement that backup after I lose my position, can't I?

Absolutely! People who click on the left are usually looking for information, and people who click on the right are usually looking to buy.

People are starting to be socialised to this with adwords pages getting more to the point, and left side sites having lots of hullaballo, reciprocal links and text padding which got them there in the first place.

Of course your adwords landing page should be a "selling" page, taking into account the higher qualification of adwords clickers.

In addition having you company name or brand in both places gives you some great branding for that search page. How could a serious buyer ignore you?

thanks, that sheds some light on things, looks like adwords has a new customer. If all else fails and sales don't increase at least I'll be earning those frequent flyer miles.
