Not sure what '...and then lost him' means exactly, narsticle - but in any case this is really a question that would best be addressed by working directly with AdWords support. I'd contact them, outline the past and present situation, and ask what can be done to assist you.
Couldn't you make a new adgroup with new ads and with all the same keywords, and pause the other adgroup for the weekend? Then pause the weekend adgroup and turn the regular one back on Monday. I have some adgroups in a campaign geared for Christmas sales, I pause them when it is not the season and run the other adgroup.
That'd be a good workaround TerriGW - though it is probably important to account for potential server delays when pausing and resuming. The server delays could result in short periods of time in which both Ad Groups were paused, or in which both were live.
