Ads displaying for terms we never bid on

What can cause this?

This morning while researching some products I happened to notice Adwords displaying our ads for terms we have never bid on. I've seen this behavior for ‘Did you mean’/misspelling results, but I checked and that is not the case with these two keywords. They are not in our adwords account but there they are in the SERPs. What other reasons could trigger this?

thanks cline, that's obviously what has happened here. I wonder if they have recently loosened the rules as these as less targeted than any broadmach ads of ours I've seen.

It's been going on since summer 05 at least. By the nature of the situation it is difficult for advertisers to see instances of the problem.

I recently had to make some very specfic keyword phrases broad match because they no longer were triggering ads on exact or phrase match - the results were horrible!

I've gone back to a policy of strictly exact match with Adwords.
