I am a newbie with Adwords. I got my ad up and it says on Google network I am ranked 8.5 position. I would like to know if 8 is still within first page?
Also I noticed that the top 3 are on the center left. So is 4th place the 1st on the right hand side.
How come some result pages don't show on the top center left? I am a little confuse.

The position you are quoting is actually your average position, over time. 8.5 means that, on average, your ad has appeared around the 8th or 9th position.

There can be a variable number of ads on the page: up to 8 on the right hand side, and up to three at the top of the page. If there are three up top, then fourth position is the first one on the right.
On the other hand, if there are two up top, then fourth position is the second one on the right. If there are zero up top, then fourth position is the fourth one down on the right.

Ads are only sent to the top spots when they meet a certain performance standard that weights ad relevancy more heavily. If no ads meet this standard, then none are 'promoted' to the top spots. Ads must also have been reviewed and approved to be promoted.
