So, what is the optimal number of keywords one should have for each keyword? We used to have 3, and each was getting OK CTR. I decided to cretae different variations to see which ad will work better (20). Is that too much? are there any negatives to having too many ads?

It depends on how much traffic you have in that particulat group and how quickly you want to know which ad converts best. The fewer ads the sooner you have results, more ads mean a longer wait but a possible better result.

I agree. If you get a couple thousand impressions per day, sure try a few. If you only get a couple hundred, then it make take longer to get a clear cut winner.

I personally never run more than two and usually have satsfactory results on my first ad. Then again, we are probably in different industries.
