The one that's valuable to the advertiser is that sometimes it can be helpful to go over your old ads and figure out how to make better new ones, or to see why you stopped using various terms or ad text.
The reasons for G keeping them available have to do with the advertiser and their campaigns' overall historical performance, which impact a variety of functions like CPC and positioning and keeping tabs on abusive advertisers, among others.
You can use the little drop-down menu to only show active campaigns, if it makes you feel any better, but they won't be leaving your profile any time soon.
(And your spelling is plenty good enough to get an answer ... they are just really s l o w sometimes. ;)
sheesh you must be able to delete them forever why do they make you keep that crap?
please tell me youre kidding
Fortunately the deleted campaigns do not have any effect on your 'total campaign' or 'total adgroup' numbers, so you can delete as many as you want without using up your quota.
During experimenting with the API I created dozens of campaigns and adgroups, just to learn about the system. I had to delete them all because they weren't real, but they are still hidden away in there. Doing a search for some keyword that was in them always turns them up, along with the active campaigns.
It's really true.

Thanks for the tip. I'm about to start writing some API code. Think I'll open a seperate account just for that. Probably worth the $5. At minimum, it will help prevent me from messing up something important.
You just can't do it in the web UI...
Put me back in the conspiracy-theorist camp. The good stuff is reserved for those with big budgets. The web UI is horribly cripled, and unless you have a huge spend, you don't have enough API quota to do anything useful.
