I'm new to advertising with adwords, how can you determine what sites your image ads are appearing on, or which ones are getting the most clicks? I have hundreds of sites linking backing to mine without advertising, so I can't simply look through my site stats for referrers.

Put a unique parameter in the URLs in your ads.

e.g. example.com/widgets?referer=Google

I was under the impression that all that does is tell me how many referrals are actually coming through Google, but not necessarily the referring site.

If you put a url with a query string as the target url for your ad, then every click on your ad, no matter what site displays the ad, will include the query string in its request.
