Today, Google VP of Advertising Sales Tim Armstrong made it official: no new Premium Sponsorships will be accepted and existing sponsors will not be able to renew at the end of their terms.

I think this is a good move. Will they move the top adwords to where the premium banners are now or are they going to just remove the banners?

Nice find.
Chris.

"Premium Sponserships" are now shown as "Adwords" on the "advertise with us" page [google.com...]

Here in the UK, my number 1 Adwords positions are still being shown at the side of the page. Anyone know when these are likely to be promoted to the old "Premium Sponsership" postions?

mistah,

thanks for sharing the changed page with the rest of us, I had been monitoring that and was wondering when they would replace it :)

as far as UK goes, I "think" the final CPM (premium) listings will expire on 31st december 2003, however lots of clients campaigns have already expired, and many have opted to go for the adowrds system.

Also I think I am correct in saying that NO new campaigns can be booked, and this stopped some time back.

premium was great if managed right, and only in certain industries, for keywords which only cost 10>15p it was very expensive.

1 final thought as this is my 1st real post as a moderator:

Adwords CPM or CPC based, will the customer notice any difference?

NO is the answer, actually some more relevant results instead of big $$$ spenders may show, so maybe it was a good move.

A lot of people seem to forget that its the users who make the ultimate decision whether a product works or not, and so far they aint complaining about Adwords being CPC rather than CPM

I agree that the skill in getting your ads a decent CTR will be of even more importance.

It will be a bit like playing your joker on it's a knockout, you'll notice the drop when you come off.

A bold move by Google to move from 3 models into the 1. (Adwords on a CPM basis, Premium and Adwords Select)

So what are the big players who buy just about every random premium listing available going to do now? You probably know who I mean - the travel site with the 20mil ad budget, the famous auction site, the price comparison site and the other big travel site...

Will they just have to pay more attention now and monitor each keyword or phrase individually? I don't see how they can cope unless they go for the old "outbid everyone by 80p" thing, like on Overture.

It is happening now, there are still a few bugs in the system, but adwords are now going to the top spots

I`ve tried for a number of our number one keywords on Adwords, but none of them are going to the top spots so far...

Google told me that they would be replacing expired Premium Sponsored keywords with the #1 & #2 Adwords listings. In other words, as a keyword or campaign gets done, those keywords will be replaced using Adwords listings. My concern is the "big boys" who have the budgets to hoard the #1 & 2 CPC spots. I've thought of switching to either Overture, Looksmart, or Inktomi. Any suggestions?
