I've been using AdSense for some time, so I thought I'd have a go at advertising my site using AdWords. I set up my account and campaign last Saturday, and in the 4 days it's been active I have had 0 (zero, zip, zilch) impressions.

I started off with a long list of keywords and used the budget optimizer; it estimated I would have 850 clicks a month, with all but 5 keywords active. I tried a Google search for some of the keywords and then clicked the 'more sponsored links' and my ad wasn't anywhere. So I tried the Ad Diagnostics tool for the keywords, and it told me I have no ads that match the search term. I go back to my list and it says that keyword is active.

So I'm thoroughly confused. I've emailed Google yesterday but haven't had a response, so I'm hoping someone here may have seen this before (or have some idea what I'm doing wrong).

This sounds like a 'keyword sensitive' issue - however, there are other reasons that it could be happening.

If your keywords are at all sensitive, or in your keyword list you used a lot of trademarked terms w/ dynamic insertion ads - your account must be reviewed before it goes live.

There are keywords that are considered sensitive that aren't easily apparent, such as 'baby blue pillow' (because of the word baby).

Best bet is to call Google or wait for a reply to your email.

eWhisper,

>This sounds like a 'keyword sensitive' issue

I started a related thread a while ago,
[webmasterworld.com...]

The reason was that I copied complete lists of keywords using the keywords tool. In some cases I too discovered my ad was not displayed (wich means zero impressions) and I wondered if 'bad keywords' (like p*rn, s*x, b*mb, k*ll or whatever) could be the reason. (I don't use the keywords on purpose in my campaigns but if you copy-paste 1000 keywords a day from the keyword tool, there might be some in the list.)

If you talk about sensitive keywords, do you mean the same as what I am calling 'bad' keywords?

AWA added a comment to my thread but did not confirm that bad keywords can damage a campaign.

Are you now suggesting that using certain types of keywords could result in your ad not being displayed and therefore zero impressions?

Sorry for breaking in to this post but I had the feeling my problem was related...

By the way, I know that copying complete lists of keywords is not a good idea for many other reasons, but I just wondered; can certain keywords result in your ad not being displayed?

Kind regards,

H.

'Bad Keywords' are a subset of 'Sensitive' keywords.

Sensitive keywords can be very legitimate keyword (i.e. children's clothing) but it still has to be reviewed due to the word 'children' and Google wanting to make sure the website is legitimately using those keywords.

'Bad keywords' can show in some circumstances, however, I belive they're all reviewed first.

I would never recommend copying and pasting a list without reading it first. You can end up with keywords that are sensitive, or worse, unrelated to what you're trying to target.

The place where one can run into issues is with dynamic insertion and trademarked keywords. If the keyword is trademarked, then it can't be shown in the ad, but if you're using dynamic insertion, then you're telling Google to use the keyword in the ad.

This can lead to accounts needing to be reviewed, and if it's a random jumble of words that don't look like they were QCed, could slow down the process.

In the end, it's best to ask Google to look into specifics. While generalizations can be made about specific accounts, no one here can see the account so specific account information can't be targeted.

It's possible if its a brand new account that your first set of ads are still being manually reviewed. New accounts tend to have their first few campaigns manually approved which can take days before the ads actually start appearing.

That could well be it - I started getting impressions about 30 minutes ago.
