Conversion stats but no tracking code!

Google developing psychic powers?

One of my adgroups is showing conversion stats. Great, except that conversion tracking code is not being used for that ad. Indeed, it's not being used at all on the site it promotes.

Emailed support yesterday, so still waiting to hear.

Is my account being used by Adwords for experiments on a new psychic tracking system or is there a more mundane explanation I should be seeking?

It's the new psychic tracking system, Syzygy. (Shhhh!)

Seriously though, this is a really interesting question - and I don't know the answer. I'll ask my Panel of Experts Who Are Smarter Than Me, however, and post again later if I've learned anything. ;)

Someone may have altered their conversion code and use your account ID by accident. That makes most sense.

Just a quick update on this one, between meetings. ;)

Syzygy, I've consulted with a colleague whose sent me the following info:

A conversion is attributed to a keyword if someone clicks on an ad triggered by it, and then reaches a conversion page for that account.

It's possible that they clicked on an ad for site A, but then navigated to site B which is part of the same account, and created a conversion. In this case, the conversion would be attributed to the keyword for site A.

So, if there is easy navigation between sites advertised in the same account, it sounds as if the mystery may be solved. ;)

Between Yahoo and Google we'd get reports of 10 conversions for the day when we only had 6 sales.

It didn't take long for us to start writing our own tracking script.

Thanks for such a speedy response, AWA - much appreciated.

Ockham's razor, I guess - although I prefered the 'psychic' alternative ;-)

AWA is right. I found out it earlier and it brings an interesting problem:

If you want to track conversions on more websites properly, you need more accounts. But it is against the TOS.

Does anybody know solution for this?

HaHa! Me too. ;)

Dave741, in this sort of situation it's always a good idea to write up what your anticipated needs are and then contact AdWords Support to ask what your options are. Many folks are surprised to learn that they have more options than they imagined.

Best of luck with that. ;)
