Beating the dead horse one more time.

I thought I had match types all figured out and then today I noticed this situation that I don't understand.

Do broad matches sometimes come up as exact matches? These are three of my keyword phrases from today (the names have been changed to protect the innocent.)

really nice widgets - $.20 CPC - 47 impressions
"really nice widgets" - $.20 CPC - 9 impression
[really nice widgets] - $.20 CPC - 1 impression

If broad match is really working and I search for something like:

fideladeloopiedoo really nice widgets

I'm figuring I should see my add. I don't (yet there aren't many results), my landing page is unique and my budget is plenty high enough. Can someone please explain?

Thanks Much!

Perhaps a stupid remark, but how about your geo-targeting? If the country where you live yourself is not on the list where the ads are shown, you won't see it when you search your keyword in Google...

HB, good point, but it can't be that either.

Ive had problems with this also.

Basically google cant guarantee what phrases or combinations will or wont be included in phrase or broad matches, some will some wont and often theres no obvious reason why.

The only answer is to think of as many possible combinations as possible and actually add them to your keyword list, with all three matching types. If you think of another one next week add it in too.

The last I knew broad matches are treated as exact matches until you establish a certain level of performance. At that time the range of keywords you match for is expanded.

Thanks MrS, that could be the case even though these keyword phrases have been around a while for me. I recall reading about this in WW before. Is it public knowledge as to what the threshhold is? Is it based on just impressions or is it CTR?

The short story here is that broad and phrase match keywords are not intended to show on every variation of a root keyword. Rather, only variations which are predicted to be relevant will show.

At the bottom line, topper99, if there are variations for which you know you'd like to show, it's a good idea to add them as keywords in their own right - as ronmcd mentions.

And if the must-have variations are not particularly relevant to the ad that they will bring up, it may be time to create a new, more targeted, Ad Group.
