Broad match keyphrases not working.

Why aren't my ads showing for broad match?

Hi there,

My adwords campaign went live over 24 hours ago.

My exact match keyphrases are triggering my ads but my broad match keyphrases are not.
Here are some examples...

I have yarra valley spa as a broad match.
If I search for the term
yarra valley spa
my ad appears at no. 1.
But if I search for the term
yarra valley spa cottage
or any other word added to the term yarra valley spa my ad is nowhere to be seen.
None of my broad match keyphrases have received any impressions except for the one
yarra valley accommodation

Another example...
I have the keyphrase
yarra valley holidays
as a broad match. If I type this in, I can't see my ad anywhere.
I also have the keyphrase
yarra valley getaway
as a broad match. If I type this in, my ad is no. 1 but if I add another word to this phrase, my ad is nowhere to be seen.

I have a comprehensive list of negative keyphrases to try and target my broad matches.

My daily budget is way above the suggested budget recommended by Google. It is currently set at $100 per day and we are only currently spending less than $10 per day.

Why are my broad match keyphrases not triggering ads?
They are all currently active.

Can anybody explain why they are not working?
Thanks, Emily

Welcome to WebmasterWorld, emilyquickfix!

When using broad or phrased matched keywords, many advertisers believe that they will automatically show on for any an all variations of their chosen keywords - but this is not actually the case.

Instead, they will only show for variations that are predicted to be relevant.

If there are variations of your broad or phrase matched keywords which you know you'd like to appear on, then your best approach would probably be to add them as keywords in their own right.

So if I removed the broad match phrase pleasant valley cottage and added about 5 various combinations which I thought this keyphrase may be searched on as exact matches instead, would I run the risk of this increasing my minimum bids in my adgroup by having low keyword quality scores for the new exact match keyphrases, as they may not have very high number of impressions?

emilyquickfix, what will actually happen depends in large part on how well targeted the keywords and the ad are. So there isn't really a way for me to predict what will occur, since I can't see the account itself, the ads, or the keywords.

I think your best bet would be to experiment. For example, if you like the performance of the broad matched general for the most part, but find that you are not showing on important variations, then it might be best to keep the broad matched keyword - and then add the variations that you know you want to appear on as additional keywords.

There is really no black and white "right" answer to this question - and the best way to find out what will happen is to be willing to experiment, to then monitor your results, and keep making 'informed' experiments until you're getting the results and return that you want.

Hi there,

Thanks for getting back to me.

What would be the best way of finding out that I am showing on "important variations" of a broad matched keyphrase when there is no click through - only impressions?

Cheers,
Emily
