Im A newbie
Just a Quick question

I insert adwords that dont have much competition
meaning one or no ads are showing on the page for that search term. But still i thought google ads were supposed to cost 0.5 or less and instead they throw a 1.00 - to 5.00 $ price -

Can anybody explain what is going on
how does the system work, its not straitforward bidding ( MIva or Overture) and its not CTR what is it

Please help

When you figure it out- let us know. ;)

No one is quite sure what is going on with the G.

I'm a noob too. I started with Adwords last weekend. I get .10 per click in a very competitive widget market. I'm still trying to figure it out.

The only problem with 10 cents per click is that I think you end up on page 3 or 4. When this happens, nobody sees you.

When I started, I had zero impressions and zero click throughs. So I set it to AUTO something-or-other. Next day it said I got like 165 impressions and 1 click (0.6 ctr). The damn click cost $1.68. That’s 20% of my profit. Another three clicks and I’d be underwater. It was probably a competitor wondering who the heck I was, because the price and shipping rates were on the adwords copy.

I turned off the Auto “thing” and now I have to rethink how to approach this. Since I turned it off I again have had no impressions.

The odd thing is, I don’t see the old data anymore. Nowhere does it say I owe $1.68. It now says I had 95 impressions instead of 165. So it’s got me confused. I guess I will have to throw more the $1.68 at it before I figure it all out.

I’ll play with it some more tomorrow when I get a chance…

Hmmm...

Now it says I only had 2 impressions and zero clicks. And it wants to deactivate 3 of my key phrases unless I up the bid from 10 cents to 20 cents :(

My bet is it will disable another group tommorrow until I end up bidding more. Oh - and it wants me to improve the quality of the 3 keywords. I wonder if I make them exact phrase matches would that be better?

Why can't we just keep things simple...even though I had no clicks or impressions I felt good about the 10 cents - you know, just in case somebody did click on it. You'd never know! It's sort of like fishing.

Keno I totally agree. It used to be that simple before the change, and I miss it. Google is still way ahead of the competition though.

I think I see what's happening on a super-thread here:
[webmasterworld.com...]

I should follow that thread. It looks like all those people are having a hard time trying to figure this out too - since Aug 16th or there abouts...

If you're new to adwords, you are screwed before you even start. Their mystical formula is designed to milk a new campaign dry, thus protecting their established advertisers. It is the most new user unfriendly program to your pocketbook. Sure their interface is easy to use, that is to sucker you into thinking the other side of the program, (the one that shows the ads), is just as simple. It's not, (can you say "other relevancy factors"!)

Be prepared to spend big $$$ to even get near the first page of results. That's why they make billions of dollars per year... :)

I am currently working on a system to bypass the huge initial costs of this program, but I'm still testing it and results are inconclusive at this moment. (I'm afraid to say what I'm doing for fear they will shut it down immediately when I announce it to the world).

Anyhow, best of luck to ya, this is a tough nut to crack.

If you're going to follow a thread to figure this out, don't follow one where the participants "are having a hard time trying to figure this out too". That would be like the blind leading the blind. :-)

Ask AWA for help. Ask Adwords support what the heck is going on. Look at threads that have solutions (hint, that thread don't have a solution).

I think when starting a new campaign, we might have to bite the bullet and offer more per click to get the ball rolling. I'm not absolutly sure, but it seems that when starting one, you're dealing with some imaginary stats that Google wants you to have faith in. I beleive that no one at google can possibly know how well your keywords will do with your ads when pertaining to your product until you run it.

Also, just because google says "offer me 30 cents for that word" doesen't mean it will actually cost that much. I set a word to 30 but still only pay 10 cents. I've had other words not act that way though.

In the end, I'm thinking even with all the problems 'The Change" has brought on, relevence is still the key. Maybe not the key to cheap keywords yet, but the key to getting the customers. And if google is screwing with us on that, it will be evident in short order. The users will let them know by moving on to some other search engine that does get the right results, rendering the big G worthless to advertisers.

If you learn anything, please keep us informed.
