I have a question on - Campaign Negative Keywords

can I use multiple words together?
free blue widget

will the above work of an exact match only?
or do I have to put it in quotes?

if I want to just remove:
free blue widgeting
should I put in in quotes:
"free blue widgeting"

and if I setup the above in quotes - will the term blue still appear in the "general" searches?

what I am concerning is, the Negative keywords are all adding in broad matches. But I know know whether multiple words can be added or not. Like if you are adding a Negative keyword "free" means, your ad wont show the related keywords of your ad which contains free. Thanks

The short answer is yes, a negative keyword can contain multiple words.

Now for the long answer…

howiejs, if you don’t want your ad to show for ‘free blue widgeting,’ then I recommend adding it as a negative exact match: -[free blue widgeting].

The phrase and exact keyword matching options work for negative keywords the same way that they do for regular keywords.

If you add -[free blue widgeting], your ad will not be displayed if the query contains these three words (and only these three words) in this order.

Negative Keyword: -[free blue widgeting]
Ad will not show for: free blue widgeting
Ad will show for: free blue widgeting item
Ad will show for: free widgeting blue

If you add –“free blue widgeting,” your ad will not be displayed as long as the query contains these three words in this order.

Negative Keyword: -“free blue widgeting”
Ad will not show for: free blue widgeting item
Ad will show for: free widgeting blue

Like if you are adding a Negative keyword "free" means, your ad wont show the related keywords of your ad which contains free.

geobals, if you add ‘free’ as a negative keyword (without brackets), your ad will not be displayed for any searches that contain the word ‘free.’

AWA2 - That's probably the best explanation I've seen of negative embedded match by a Google employee.

You're definitely pulling your weight ;)

*ruffles hair* There's just one small thing that's bugging me...</columbo>

Re: priority/precidence:
If I have [free widgets] as a keyword in one of my adgroups, and also have -[free widgets] as a negative keyword, which one `wins`?

In a nutshell, will my advert be shown if the user searches for [free widgets], when I have it as both a positive and negative keyword?

Thanks, eWhisper! :)

No.

christh, if you have [free widgets] and –[free widgets], your ad will not be displayed for the search ‘free widgets.’

That's all well and good BUT negative keywords are NOT working on my account and I've had no reply from Adwords support.

AWA2 - please answer this:

I have a campaign with many groups. There are 2 types of keyword combinations I am using (all broad match)-

1. many "service locality", such as widget repairs birmingham. These show adverts that will deliver the visitor to the correct page for their query.

OR

2. for queries without a geographical identifier, "service" but with the addition of negative keywords that match the localities targeted on the first type of advert. This should pick up all queries that include "service" but do not include a locality. These adverts send the visitor to a national page on the site as location cannot be established, hence they have another step to go through to get to what they want.

So what really happens?

The system IGNORES the negative keywords and shows adverts that it should not. if someone searches for "widget repairs birmingham" and I have a birmingham targeted local advert, it is usually ignored and the system shows the national advert, even though it has a negative keyword for birmingham.

To make matters worse, when localised adverts do show they have a much better CTR. there is no reason that the local adverts should not show. This is the result of the recent change as the probblem was not there before to anywhere near the same extent.

This is costing me money and failing to show the best information on searches. I am really upset with this and would like to know why this is happening, especially as I have had no response from Google.

How can I fix this?

I've still not had an answer from Adwords. Am I asking a delicate question? Please prove me wrong AWA2. I really like Adwords, although I prefer it when it works correctly.

inbound, I apologize for any frustration that you may have experienced. If you would consider emailing AdWords Support again, I’d be happy to forward your example to our Tech folks.

If you decide to email us, please do so from within your account, and include the specific campaign, Ad Groups, and keywords in question. It would also be helpful if you could use the following subject line:

"attention: adwordsadvisor by request – negative keywords"

Thanks!
