It's been a nightmare for some but there is a ray of hope. I think it's possible to get loads of 5c KW's that cost less than that if you go for 2 word combo's.

I was really concerned when I had to set up a 30,000 term campaign on the day of the adwords algo change.

I know this won't seem helpful to many people but the campaign touches on loads of areas so it can't be a fluke.

Here are the stats:

All KW's are 5c or 10c
Just 1% of KW's are inactive
Most are 2 word terms
CTR is only 1.5%
Ave CPC is 4c
All terms route to a unique dynamic page based on KW combo
There are over 50 ad creatives based on the main area the ad is in
Conversion is very good

Sorry I can't be more specific, T&C's & client confidentiality are the issues

The thing that I found interesting is that certain keywords that I had a history of and had a high CTR, I was able to get cheaply. Keywords that were of the same make up (instead of city + widget, I tried a different city + widget), the CPC was four times higher.

To summarize, it paid to have the keyword previously established. Perhaps most people knew this, but I didn't. Had I known this, I would have added a bunch of keywords prior to the switch over and most likely been able to maintain them at a lower rate than post-conversion.
