Recommended Budget tool broken?

Severely underestimating daily budgets

Maybe I don't understand how this thing works, but it seems like there's something really wrong with the recommended daily budget tool all of a sudden.

I have a campaign that was originally set to $70/day. When I checked it, it said "budget is ok". Except that my client noticed his ads weren't running, and called up to ask why not. This was about 2pm in the afternoon. I checked the campaign, and it was at about 85% of daily budget. I ran the recommended budget tool again, and it still said $70/day was ok, but since things weren't running, I upped it to $120. Three hours later, the words weren't running again. I checked the account - we were at 92% of budget for the daily. Recommended budget still said ok. I then upped it to $200, and it stopped running ads about 10:00pm or so, because I was maxed out for the day. This has been going on for three days now. I haven't noticed too many problems on my other campaigns, but this one is particularly important (and competitive) The recommended budget tool is still telling me that $70/day is a good number, but $200/day isn't even taking me through the whole day. So am I misunderstanding how this tool works, or is there some problem somewhere?

How much have you been spending on that campaign before the last few days? Has it always been around the $70 mark or a lot less? Or is it a keyword that could have suddenly become a topical search word?

I usually set mine about 4 or 5 times higher than I can reasonably expect to spend. I got tired of guessing.

It is unbelievable that G doesn't have some sort of symbol that will tell you various statuses of campaigns.
