Does it help?

Hi

Recently started my first adwords campaign - and discovered the importance of getting a good CTR on your ad in terms of ad position you can achieve for a given CPC.

My question is - if you are targetting the term "fuzzy widgets", how big a boost is it to your CTR if the display URL shows the domain name FuzzyWidgets.com

I'm assuming it's got to help - but I'm not sure if it is a really major factor - anyone out there experienced a high CTR with a prime domain name like this?

Obviously, I'm assuming that other factors like well targetted keywords and a well written ad have been taken care of also.

No direct experience, but I would have thought that it helps. It is fairly widely agreed that users like ads which contain the keywords they have searched for, and given that the display url takes up a fair proportion of the overall 'ad space' it should draw the users eye to it if it contains the keyword(s) they typed in.

Thanks

I'm more assuming it would help because of the 'credibility factor', rather than just having the keywords in the URL.

For example

You could have the domain 'BestFuzzyWidgets.com', which has the keywords in it - but simply FuzzyWidgets.com looks much more professional.

I know that it would be the first option I would check out - because it is more likely that you are going to get a quality website.

Just a quick note that may apply here, Tiebreaker.

Also remember that your Display URL must accurately reflect your Destination URL, in order for the ad to be approvable.

Quoting from the Editorial Guidelines:

...Your Display URL must accurately reflect the URL of your website. If your actual destination URL link is too long for your ad, use a shortened version (such as your homepage) that meets the character limit for this field...

Thanks

My display URL currently takes the form of either ...

FuzzyWidgets.com

or ..

FuzzyWidgets.com/sales

Depending on whether I am targetting the keyphrase [fuzzy widgets] or [fuzzy widgets for sale]

In both cases, the display URL matches exactly the destination URL - but I'm assuming that the same 'credibility factor' will exist in either case, for people looking for the best fuzzy widgets website.

Tiebreaker, display URL's can really help your CTR's. Domains are cheap and many times it is worth purchasing a domain just to improve your CTR or conversions, especially when you are in a competitive industry. Sometimes adding a relevant folder that includes some of your search terms helps also - FuzzyWidgets.com/RedandGreen/

Test, test, test your ads. You will find it interesting whether or not your searchers prefer the URL in one of these formats:
FuzzyWidgets.com
www.FuzzyWidgets.com
[FuzzyWidgets.com...]
FuzzyWidgets.com/RedandGreen/
www.FuzzyWidgets.com/RedandGreen/
fuzzywidgets.com
www.fuzzywidgets.com
[fuzzywidgets.com...]
fuzzywidgets.com/redandgreen/
www.fuzzywidgets.com/redandgreen/
FUZZYWIDGETS.COM
WWW.FUZZYWIDGETS.COM
[FUZZYWIDGETS.COM...]
FUZZYWIDGETS.COM/REDANDGREEN/
WWW.FUZZYWIDGETS.COM/REDANDGREEN/

There does not seem to be a wrong or right answer or general preference when it comes to format. It all depends on the search terms being used, the words used in the ads, the layout/look of the ad and the preference of the searchers who see the ad.
