When a user clicks through on one of my adwords listings, sometimes the source (in my logs) is listed as
[pagead2.googlesyndication.com...] while othertimes it is the url of the referring website - eg [example.com...]

Why is this? Why don't they all come from the googlesyndication url?

Tks

When you see the full URL it is because it comes from a premium publisher that is allowed to take the google javascript ads code and merge them with their own page, i.e. it is not longer an iframe, so you get the referer from the direct place where the ad was shown.

The one with googlesyndication is a click that comes form a common website that uses the google ads code without alteration.

pagead2.googlesyndication.com is the referring URL for AdSense clicks.

Only clicks that come through the 'content matching' options will carry that referring URL. Depending on your stats program, you might get both the website and the pagead2.googlesyndication.com listed as the referrer.
