Avg position effect on CTR

Hello all, this is my post in these forums. I have been reading for a while and the adwords forum is a tremendous resource!

My question is, do keywords with a not so good average position provide any value at all to your campaign?
is it possible to get a CTR greater than 0.5% with a keyword that has an average position higher than 20?
Is there a number that you see a sharp decline in CTR? (perhaps above 16 or the 2nd page?)

What effects do these keywords have your campaign? Obviously if you have bad keywords with low CTR you risk the account being slowed even if some other keywords are performing well, correct?

Thanks alot for any advice you can give me.

I don't think there is a one size fits all answer.

we have words with lower ad placement that do ok for us.

One thing to consider is that the lower down the ad the more the person is shopping and looking so perhaps the more likelyhood to convert.

in other words the lower average placement the higher the ROI, perhaps.

But it depends mostly on your product or service.

There is not always a direct correlation between the position and the CTR. For e.g., if your position is 9, then it is ver much possible that the CTR could be better than if your position is 8. That is because if you're at 9 that means you are at the top of the second page instead of the bottom of the first page(assuming no ads on the top vertical bar). True the number of clicks at position 9 might be lower than at position 8 but impressions will also be lower and hence CTR might be higher.

Yes I read that slightly lower placements such as the top of page 2 will produce better results, and it is understandable why that is.
What I am really wondering though is what kind of results keywords on page 5 or 6 can produce?
Seeing as they can be had for a very low CPC, there is some potential value to using hundereds of keywords that have bad positions to generate the clicks.

My concern is that the CTR may be very low on page 5 or 6 ad and will eventually cause your account to be slowed.
My initial thought is that when a user gets to page 6, they are looking for something very specific in the search portion of the page, not the adwords column. You figure that someone could find anything they are after in the adwords column long before page 6 came around wouldn't you?

I still want to keep these keywords running however, as I may some success in Adsense as I am showing them in both search and content.

Thanks.
Mike

CTR may be very low on page 5 or 6

There is absolutelly no reason for this. Page 5 or 6 of course means much less clicks than page 1, but also MUCH LESS IMPRESSIONS!

If the CTR for the ad is OK on position 6 or 7 (it means on page 1), then I do not see any reason, why it should be worse on other pages.
