I've been trying to figure out a way to either search [google.com...] using estimatedTotalResultsCount in the Google Web API and or get the information from the AdWords API but haven't found it to be possible.
Any suggestions?
[google.com...]
Try it, where widgets can either be a word or a phrase.
If I'm not mistaken you're seeing everyone who has a valid bid on the term, not just those who happened to show for a given search.

Is there any easy way to find out how many competitors are bidding on a given keyword/phrase in AdWords?
One thing worth keeping in mind when evaluating this, is that the number of advertisers appearing in any given moment is not necessarily the same as the total number of advertisers for that keyword.
For example, lots of advertisers are not budgeted for their ads to show all the time - and as a consequence they're only showing during a fraction of the 24 hour day.

I assume that from a lack of any reference there is no way to accomplish this with either the AdWords API or the Web API?
I've bored everyone silly in the past by endlessly mentioning that I'm not particularly technical, but it's a fact.
As a result, I'm not personally familiar with what can (or can't) be done with the APIs. However, you may want to field this question on the AdWords API Forum, which is right here:
Hope that helps at least a bit. I suspect you might get some more action on this thread as the day goes on, too.
