Two ads on same kw's...

...is this allowed?

A bit of a refresher and some clarification needed.

I want to set up a new campaign, highly focused to target specific areas of the medical profession. However, I've just realised that some of the kw's I need to use are already applied in another campaign, for something else aimed at a separate, unrelated niche in the same generic profession.

I can't afford to drop these kw's from the existing campaign, yet likewise can't afford to not use them in the new one. There is no way that the two campaigns can be integrated in to one.

In this type of scenario, can I have two ads using the same kw's - is this allowed?

If not, what are my alternatives?

It is allowed, but only one ad will show (if both are in the same account and the campaigns are targeted the same).

The only alternative that I see is to add the Text Ad to the old KW and disable "Optimize ad serving..." Both texts will get a "fair share".
Otherwise, there is no way to have two text ads served for the same KW (in the same account, same target)

As mike_ppc said, only one ad will appear.

But if your target audience is located in different location then you might want to consider, to create a new campaign which targets new location. For example :- if you are targetting USA in previous campaign and if the new campaign should target non-USA countries then you can use same keywords in both the campaigns without getting too much worried about Google showing only single ad.

Same thing applies if you want to target regional locations.

Other alternative is to get a new account and start a new campaign there. I'm not sure whether you will agree to opt for this alternative. But I have suggested, just for the sake of all possible alternatives :)

Yes and you can always speak to Adwords support to know their perspective and any suggestions from them pertaining to this problem.

If the same keywords can be applied to multiple themes within the same website, making a custom landing page which explains the two programs and invites them to follow the link which leads to the more specific program info can also work.

Thanks all.

Now, a bit later on in the year, that will work a treat as we have more of the same to come. I can see that I'll be able to create a generic ad for several sectors and point them to the same place. Cheers, eWhisper.

Well, that's the theory. I've just set up the ad group/campaign mentioned above and, upon saving, a third of the specialised medical kw's - yet again including kw's that no-one else is using - went straight to Hold status. Aargh!
