Is it possible to see the price being paid for a keyword

No Patrick. It is not possible to see the max CPC of your competitors for a keyword. Google has not included this feature probably because it is not very useful, since ranking is based on (CTR x CPC) value.

If you put the maximum cost per click (£40 in UK) and calculate estimates, the forecast average position for each keyphrase is 1.0 and the average cost-per-click should be 1p over the average currently being bid. It's just a rule of thumb but it should give some indication of a brute force pitch for the number 1 slot.

However, as stated elsewhere, that doesn't take into account the effectiveness of your ad. If your ad is ineffective it may be displayed below a lower bid ad that has a higher CTR (and vice versa).

Oh, and don't forget to Cancel changes otherwise you could end up with some very expensive clicks!
