One site reached the #1 in desired keyword in Google, the same site is showing ad on #1 using adwords. Does that make sense or should cancel the adword ad.
I guess ppl prefer the "free result" and the site is showing anyway.

But you can also consider the effect of a strong presence using still the ad...

In fact CTR went down since site reached #1 I guess because many people click in the free result instead the ad for the same keyword.

What do you think?

Leave the ad and measure conversions. It works for many of our clients. When you are "all over the top" op the screen this helps.

Any way to measure conversions? I pasted the code in the past but didn't help much... my users that come from other sites referred also land in my "conversions" page (a form asking services)...

The adwords conversion stuff works fine if installed right. Have a look at the installation manual (AWA probably has a URL somewhere).

Doe this happen to be a broadmatched keyword?

Is it possible that the ascension to the top position moved the keyword from pretending to be a phrase to actually being a broad matched keyword?

Did the impressions go up (to support the above theory), and therefore the CTR went down?

Sorry, didn't see this till just now. The installation manual (aka Setup guide) is always available from within one's account by following this path:

Campaign Summary > Tools > Conversion Tracking > Setup guide (.pdf)

It works best to keep both the organic result and the ad. This will often increase overall CTR. Keep it as long as it sits on the righthand side, drop it if it moves to the top of the serps (if it's the only ad at the top). Keeping it if it moves to the top spot is waisting money if your free results can be there. With 2 ads at the top it's a bit more difficult to decide :)

One good reason to keep both running is insurance. If there is an algo change that wipes you out of the free serps you will not need to scramble.

I would just start adjusting your bid down to the level that will keep your ad at the bottom of the first page of ads.

The paid result also enables you to control the messaging more precisely which can be a tremendous advantage if there is an offer to promote or some unique attribute of the product/service that may not be displayed in the organic result.
