First since Feb 18th i have noticed a drammatic dropp in ctr's and increased cost per click for no particualr reson.

Trying to figure this out and wonder if you have an adgroup of 10 keywords, 3 of them have very poor ctr...
Can the low CTR keywords "dragg" the good ones down with them? Or is each keyword perfomrance calculated separately?

Thanks,

Jerry

I have been noticing this same problem since about the same time. Hopefully somebody has some info Re: this topic. For some reason, ads are not being floated to the top lately for my main keyphrases

Welcome to WebmasterWorld, dexman!

It is pretty hard to diagnose what might be going on without actually seeing your account, so it might be worth contacting AdWords Support. It could be due to any number of things.

For example you might have started to use more general keywords, or single-word keywords - both of which can easily have a lower CTR, and a higher Max CPC to be competitive. Or you might have more competitors all of a sudden - especially if your product or service is seasonal in nature - and this is the season. :)

In a simple overview, though, each keyword's performance is calculated separately - and low CTR keywords will not drag down the CTR of better performers.

Lots of past threads on this topic, AWD - but briefly what gets you to the top is a particularly good CTR. Raising your Max CPC won't do it, although I guess it could contribute in a sense.

Also ads must have been reviewed and approved to be sent up top. So if you have made any edits to your ads recently, they will for certain come down from the top until reviewed and approved. Then, whether they go back up or not depends on if they still meet the additional 'performance bar' that focuses on CTR, as a measure of relevance.

Sorry to be brief, but I was just stopping by while doing something else.

Welcome to WebmasterWorld to you as well AWD!

Thanks For the response. I am glad I have found Webmaster World as it truly offers a World of info on advertising.

Funny thing is that i have noticed a major drop in ctrs across the entire account the momnet i started using split ads for each ad group. One thing that has to be considered which i totally missed is that as AWA mentioned when you create an ad it takes sometimes 2-3 days to have it approved and showed on afiliate networks. So if you have 2 ads and you change these or one after 2 days of looking at ctr than, you might be chasing your own tail and bring seriously deteriorate your campaign.

So what i am doing now is having 2 to 3 ads running for a week or so before changing and never changing more than one out of 2 or 3. We will see what happens.

It is a learning curve but an exciting one.
