Negative Keyword Priority

The perennial neg kw Q

Time for a newbie question of my own.

Okay. I have a negative keyword of -free in a campaign, as I don't want freeloaders wasting my nickels. BUT a merchant suddenly launches a promo offering free widgets (with a modest commission). I obviously want to cash in on this, and setup a keyword in an adgroup: "free widgets", leaving the -free campaign negative intact.

User types "free widgets" into Google. Is my advert shown, or does the -free negative kick in. Also, would [free widgets] or free widgets show? (assuming I only have the phrase match above as my keyword)

Probably very newbie, but searching previous posts on WW I'm not quite sure as the priority in this case.

I'd prefer to set up a new ad group or campaign for the free offer, withou the negative keyword -free. It's simple and safe solution.

Good idea Marek. I'll remove '-free' from the campaign negs and add it to all the non-free adgroups. Cheers.

You might also consider using the embedded match function depending on how your keywords are set up.

I've never seen this option addressed in the Google FAQs, just in the one AdWords Professional Video found here:
