Limit to Keyword List?

I am going to give Adwords a try.
I'm going the cheapest route at the moment bidding .05 for key phrases like blue widgets, red widgets, big red widgets etc. It is ranking most at 1.0 and 0 costs (or a few cents). I know these phrases are searched because I see them in my stats. I shouldn't go broke while I get the hang of how this all works.

The list is quite long and I may add a few more. Is there a limit to how many keywords or phrases you select?

Happy New Year!

Porkchop,

Best wishes to you as well. Many keywords is not a problem. We have campaigns with thousands and tens of thousands of keywords. Make sure you catagorise them in campaigns and adgroups.

Porkchop - let us know if any of these end up disabled with high CTR. Also, don't be surprised if many go "In Trial" for the first couple days.

Recommended limit of keywords per adgroup is 500. Absolute limit of keywords per adgroup is 2000.

I am newer than a newbie :-) Can you explain this to me?

Porkchop----

CTR means Click Through Rate.... The higher it is, the more you have to pay to google, because whenever someone clicks on your ad, YOU pay... so if these costs are higher than the income from clickers who actually buy something from the site when clicking on your ad, your profit is negative and it`s only reasonable to close or modify your adgroup (because of way too high CTR and way too low number of actual customers)

Yes, there are some recommended limits, porkchop, which I'll outline further below. Before I do, though, I'll say that folks on this Forum often exceed these recommendations with no problem. Still, be aware that there is the possibility of introducing account navigation issues when the limits are exceeded.

Also, at the risk of sounding like a broken record, I really believe that it is quality that matters, not quantity. I also believe that, especially as a new advertiser, you'll want to focus on developing an appropriately sized list of excellent keywords, rather than simply the longest list of keywords you can generate.

Many keywords is not a problem. We have campaigns with thousands and tens of thousands of keywords. Make sure you catagorise them in campaigns and adgroups.

Robsp is correct in saying that if you use a ton of keywords, you will want to really organize the heck out of them - and this assumes that the keywords pertain to your product or service to begin with. If, on the other hand, you simply download a dictionary full of keywords, regardless of whether they are targeted or not, you'll probably find AdWords to be really frustrating at first.

Recommended limit of keywords per adgroup is 500. Absolute limit of keywords per adgroup is 2000.

So here are the recommended Campaign, Ad Group, and keyword limits:

* Max recommended keywords for a single Ad Group: 750

* Max recommended number of Ad Groups in a Campaign: 100

* Max recommended keywords for a campaign, inclusive of all Ad Groups: 2000

* Max number of campaigns per account: 25

* Max recommended keywords for an account: 50,000 (25 campaigns x 2000 keywords = 50,000)

Hope this helps, and I wish you ever success as you begin to experiment with AdWords. ;)
