Hello,

I've inputted tens of thousands of keywords into Google Adwords (since 2002). However, whenever I add new keywords to new adgroups, Google put a red warning on my account saying:

We were unable to process your request to add and/or edit your keywords.
Adding these keywords would increase your account's total number of keywords beyond a manageable amount. Please add either fewer keywords or reduce the number of existing keywords in your account. Refining your keyword lists ensures your keywords are as targeted and relevant as possible. Click here to learn more about managing your keyword list.

What is Google's overall account keyword limit? Pls. advise me on what to do.

Regards,
Alex

Pls. advise me on what to do.

The short answer to this question, alextc, really, is to scour your account for keywords which are giving you poor results, as you define poor results, and delete them.

Some possible measures while evaluating which keywords deliver poor results:

* Keywords are disabled, even if within a paused or deleted Ad Group or campaign

* Keywords are getting no impressions, or very few impressions

* Keywords are getting no clicks, or very few clicks

* Keywords are not delivering conversions, while otherwise performing well

* Keywords are delivering a negative (or just low) ROI, while otherwise performing well

* Keywords are very competitive, and are putting you unacceptably low in the results for your Max CPC

* Keywords are costing more per click than other words in the Ad Group that are getting excellent results for less

* Keywords describe a product a service that you no longer offer

* Keywords don't describe the product or service that you do offer

* Keywords are duplicates of each other. For example 'Wooden Dino Skeleton', and 'wooden dino skeleton' are exactly the same keyword in the eyes of the system, but if you have both, then you have doubled the number of keywords

* And so on....

So bottom line, decide what 'good performance' means to you, and make a project of getting rid of keywords that are not giving you good performance.

Of course, if you have tens of thousands of keywords, this can take some time. But, it is probably time well spent, and it certainly doesn't have to be done in one sitting. ;)

AWA says, "The short answer to this question, alextc, really, is to scour your account for keywords which are giving you poor results, as you define poor results, and delete them."

I do not blame you AWA for the Google AdWords system as you did not design it. Heck you just do the best with what you are given I am sure. But the messaging within Google Adwords accounts is ridiculous.

I have the 'unmanageable size message' in my account and I am unable to add new keywords. The message is complete malarky (sp? was trying to use a nicer word).

I also have messages about poorly performing keywords in each ad group that need to be improved (the ones 'in trial' or 'on hold'). Well that is complete malarky also because as we have all learned you can post a brand new keyword to your account and have it be labeled 'in trial' or 'on hold' before it ever gets an impression. Therefore the message for that stuff in my account is 100% inaccurate. How can something underperform before it ever gets a chance? Maybe I need the crystal ball you guys have.

Back to the unmanageable size of keywords in my account. It specifically says there are to many keywords in my account. Well one week ago I had X number of keywords. I added new keywords into my account and I got the message for the first time. I deleted all the keywords I added plus a few hundred extra. Guess what, the messaging is still there.

So while the message Google gives me may mean something completely different than what it says, it does not mean the total number of my keywords. How do I know? I deleted everything, every single one of them.

I may be a bit frustrated because I once again believed the messaging in my account and wasted hours of my time trying to fix something where the messaging was a complete lie. I come to this forum and read people day in and day out upset about the lies the messages say.

I do say the messaging is lieing because it is.
Some may say, if your having such problems then just leave. I may do that at one time, not sure. Okay thats my vent. Bah humbug.
