I'm checking my keywords - one minute it tell me that I "don't have any ads that trigger that keyword" when I know that I do - so I test the same phrase again & it says "you have another ad that is also triggering this keyword so it cannot be shown"!

What does all that mean!?

Neither of these statements are true & I'm getting a pretty poor performance on this campaign at the moment -?

hpops, first let me try to explain how the diagnostic tool works. This'll help you to see that different results from one 'test' to the next are not at all unusual.

Think of every single keyword search being a unique online auction for the showing of, as well as the position of, AdWords ads. Each keyword search brings up the ads that are qualified to show in that instant, then positions them according to the rank number of each competitor's keyword.

Well, each time you run the diagnostic tool it is going through this same process, in the instant that you're checking. So different results are not unusual.

Now if you get different results, and they're all wrong, well that's another thing. ;)

And if that's the case, then you have my apology. Under the hood, this is a really complex tool - and I think you'll find that it's accuracy will improve over time. If the tool is delivering odd results, then I think I'd advise contacting AdWords support directly, as they can look at your account and give you an informed opinion.

Nothing like a human being, sometimes. :)

BTW, were you also wondering about the meaning of the message "you have another ad that is also triggering this keyword so it cannot be shown"? I'm not familiar with that exact wording, but it sounds as if it's saying that the keyword is used in more than one Ad Group. Possible?

If you have more than 1 ad in a group, the estimator often gives odd results as to why your ad isn't showing.

I think there are 2-3 different error messages I've seen, when I know the reason the ad isn't triggered is because there is more than 1 ad which could be shown for that keyword, even when the keyword only appears once in an account.

Not possible, definitely. AdGroup or Campaign. While there are definitely valid reasons for having the same kw in different campaigns, you'll want to make sure the bids are roughly the same. Otherwise, it may be the turn for the .05 version to show, when you have a $2.00 version of the word in another campaign. The $2.00 version of the word may be bypassed with the above message accompying the ad, but instead of showing the .05 version, the tool (which is of limited trustworthiness anyway) will say "We would have shown that ad but it's been slowed, won't make the first page or bid too low, etc".

I'm paraphrasing a bit here, but you miss out on valuable showings that way.

At this point, don't rely on the tool to judge your campaigns, do some searches yourself and see how your fare.
