For a particular search term we ranked number 1, however, instead of ranking the product page, Google ranked our site map, which links to the product page using the search term as the link text.
This was a pain since if the user typed in their search term, they then had to find the product on the sitemap and follow the link in order to view and purchase it.
However, I placed an Adwords ad for the same search term about fifteen minutes ago, which linked directly to the product. Whilst testing the ad to see if it was working, I noticed that Google no longer showed the number 1 ranking spot as our sitemap, but actually as our product page.
Do Google, or can Google, override the link displayed in the natural listings based on Adwords data, or is this just a bizarre datacenter issue?

The databases for AdWords and SERPS are completely seperate. I'd guess this was a "bizarre datacenter issue"
Just chiming in to agree with eWhisper, and to provide an official "No connection between search and AdWords" straight from the horses's mouth. ;)
