What is Trump in Adwords?

I'm trying to understand a bit better "what trumps what" in Adwords listings.

Assuming IDENTICAL CTR and CPC (bear with me here)....

Would regional listings at the "city" level get the top billing?

It seems like the most relevant would be:

city--->state--->national listings.

Which leads to a second question...if this is the case...how much preference is given to the "trump cards"?

Case study:
Assuming they all have a 1.0% CTR....
What will "win" if I have a:

  • $1.00/click national targeted keyphrase
  • $.40/click statewide targeted keyphrase
  • $.20/click city/locality targeted keyphrase

    I sort of try to not be the first to respond, but since this one has been here for a few hours, here goes:

    We are sort of in the realm of the theoretical here, stuntdubl, since the chances of two ads having the same CTR and Max CPC are tiny.

    I say this because your CTR is not really calculated to one decimal place as it appears in your stats, where it is rounded off. In reality it is calculated to many decimal places. So the chances of two ads having the same CTR in the same moment for the same search are pretty slim - as one will always have, say, a one-ten-thousandth of one percent advantage (just as an example).

    If it did happen, I'm about 95% certain that the system would pick an ad to show at random. In any case, the city--->state--->national hierarchy does not apply - they are all equal, and one does not trump the other.

    It's been discussed quite a bit in the past on this forum which ad will be shown when a keyword appears in multiple campaigns or Ad Groups. The brief answer, however, is very straightforward. The system will show the ad with the highest Maximum CPC. If both ads have the same Max CPC, then it will show the one with the highest CTR in the instant that the search was done. And the targetting will not enter into it, in either case.

    To get to your Case Study:

    Assuming they all have a 1.0% CTR....
    What will "win" if I have a:

    * $1.00/click national targeted keyphrase

    * $.40/click statewide targeted keyphrase

    * $.20/click city/locality targeted keyphrase

    Assuming that, above, you mean Maximum CPC, then the "$1.00/Max CPC national targeted keyphrase" would 'win', since it has the highest Max CPC.
