I'm wondering if one gets credit in terms of building a history of site traffic, for the purposes of obtaining better rankings, if one engages an adwords or overture campaign. Thanks, you folks are wonderful teachers.

Google:-

According to GoogleGuy, no.

The SERPS index and AdWords are completely independant.

Overture:-

No idea.

I dont know but, the more partners google ad sence
place on their site, then when google's bots see the
site , they also see your url, hence yet another link
for link popularity,, our clients sites have been
increacing in link popularity as the google partners
are placing the google ad sence on their site and
roboting the page with our ad or clients ads.

That's what I thought at first but I don't think that is true marketingmaniac (I could be wrong). I believe your google ad links go to google first (to record clicks) and then google sends the browser to the proper site. So when google spiders the site and your ad does appear the spider gets the text of the link but not an actual URL pointing to your site.

Adsense links do not count for Google link pop. There must be a static link to be counted.

Directhit.com, popular until AskJeeves purchased it,was well known for using click-thru data to help determine rankings. But it's gone now.
My Looksmart rep. claimed they were experimenting with it.

But worth noting, a study was done showing an increased click-thru rate on organic listings if the paid listing was also present - an argument I often use for clients who ask why do we bid on terms that we already show up for.
