Keywords disabled

After 0 impressions... and other inconsistencies

Just started two new ads late yesterday, wanted to experiment with a new tack to see how it fared. Checked the stats this morning and am a bit confused by what I see...

Across both ads are about half a dozen keywords that have been disabled, after 0 impressions! The words/phrases are standard technical terms or phrases relative to laboratory science and engineering and are not trademarks, offensive, etc.

Also seeing other inconsistencies such as:

Clicks/Imps
0/4 - disabled
0/21 - disabled
1/38 = 2.6% - At risk
0/34 - At risk
0/124 - Strong
0/50 - Moderate
0/19 - disabled

Other words & phrases appear fine and are unaffected.

I'm obviously missing something here because it doesn't make any sense at all. Any explanations before I email aw support?

Thanks,

Syzygy

Are those KWs in any deleted campaigns and have been disabled before?

If you have a disabled KW in a deleted campaign, the KW still exists as disabled in your campaign and would stop new impressions from ocurring.

Interesting. I didn't know that - thanks eWhisper.

In checking I see that some of the kw's have indeed been previously disabled in other ad groups within the same campaign. However, not all of them; others are one's that I've deleted in prior ads because of lack of performance, but which I now want to use again in better targeted ads.

So does this mean that once a keyword/phrase becomes disabled you are unable to use it again - even in much more targeted campaigns/ad groups/ads? Do I read that right? Surely a bit harsh - particularly in looking at the ones here in my campaigns that have been disabled!

Also, what about the words I've previously deleted and now want to re-use. Why are these being disabled now - any thoughts?

Cheers,

If you have a KW you want to use and can't seem to use it. Delete it it every single place (check both deleted and active campaigns).

I.E. Go into deleted camaigns, goto edit kws, remove all the kws from the deleted campaign. You should now have a deleted campaign with 0 KWs in it.

Then readd the KW to the group you want it to appear.

This should fix the problem.

OK. Will remove all traces of kw's previously disabled or deleted across all campaigns & ad groups and use them afresh.

Much appreciated,

This may be a good time for me to return to one of my AdWords Housekeeping Mantras:

As a matter of routine, it is best to delete any 'Disabled' keywords as soon as you see them - whether or not you plan to use them again.

This can prevent account-wide searches for these words at a later date, if you do decide to give them another try weeks later.

In addition, even though your ads are not showing for your 'Disabled' keywords, they are still active in the eyes of the system. One example of how this can affect you is that 'Disabled' keywords are still budgeted for by the system that calculates the recommended budget. This can prevent your ad from showing as often as it might otherwise, if your actual budget is lower than the recommended budget.

So, IMO, get rid of 'em ASAP.

Thanks AWA,

I have going thru that dilemma. What to do with disabled keywords. Problem is some of them are still showing and they are quite relevant to my campaigns

AWA, could you please explain what you mean by "account-wide searches":

This can prevent account-wide searches for these words at a later date, if you do decide to give them another try weeks later.

Thanks!

OK maybe I am crazy but how in the world do you justify disabling a keyword that has 5.8% CTR?

AWA, could you please explain what you mean by "account-wide searches"?

My pleasure, Gorilla - sorry if I wasn't clear.

All I really meant was that it is best to delete 'disabled' keywords while you are looking at them, rather than have to search your entire account to find them if you want to delete them later.

In your AdWords account you can create 25 campaigns, and each campaign can have 100 Ad Groups. Therefore, your account can have up to 2500 Ad Groups, and a total of up to 50,000 keywords.

So potentially, one might have a lot to search through.

Although the real truth is that it isn't that hard to find keywords in your account if you use the 'Search my campaigns' function at the top right of Campaign Management pages.

Hope that makes more sense.
