Combining -word with "keyword"

Why can't I combine word exclusions with "keyword"? Google accepts them but the next day they are gone. Tried several times. They don't show up as deleted either.

We use the " " to prevent extra broad listings but they are single words.

Many thanks!

Something is buggy with the Adwords interface lately. I have an outstanding question with their customer support as follows:

I tried to change a keyword from broad to exact e.g.

red widgets ** 2.0 ** http.//domain.com/?myid=GGL1234&gtse=Goog&gtkw={keyword}

to

[red widgets] ** 2.0 ** http.//domain.com/?myid=GGL1234&gtse=Goog&gtkw={keyword}

and two things happen:

The next screen shows this keyword as being ready for Deletion(!) and if you scroll down (I have about 20 negative kwds), there is a red warning that I am using illegal characters. If I choose to Save, this modified keyword gets deleted!

I understand that a modified kwd is "deleted" and the modification shows as a new keyword, but I lost an entire adgroup because I didn't scroll down to see the warning. I just hit Save and got an ad group with no keywords!

So, either my problem is related to your issue with negative keywords or a separate problem.

All suggestions including RTFM welcome. :)

HitProf, if there is a bug at work, I haven't heard of any other examples from other advertisers. A bug is possible of course, but if we have one I typically hear about it many times in the course of a day

Is there any chance you simply didn't save the changes you made, and then moved on to another page without looking again?

Please try again, and make a point of saving the changes. If the changes are saved, but disappear the next day, then please write to AdWords support. We would certainly want to take a look at that!

Many thanks.

PS to anallawalla - I am not sure I can really picture what you've described, and this sounds like another case where seeing the actual account would be important. So, I hope and trust that your email will be answered soon.

I thought you couldn't use a dynamic {Keyword} in adwords destination urls, just like you're trying to do in your example above?

Isn't that why anallawalla is having a problem? (illegal character errors etc...)

The exact error reads:
[red]Some of your keywords are not accepted for the following reason:
Non-standard characters are not allowed
Please modify your keywords. [/red]

chrisk999, you are right (within keywords - they are fine in the creative) - the problem is with the dynamic keyword {braces}? How was it entered in the first place? (The person who did them is no longer with the company). I tried to create a new ad group and pasted the same keywords and got rejected straightaway.

It is clearly part of powerposting but I cannot find a FAQ or prior discussion about this on WW.

AWA, I asked my account manager, so my enquiry might be in her inbox and she might be on holidays.

AWA,

I'm sure I saved my changes but I'll try again. I've made some screenshots with the negative keywords accepted and will check back next year :)

Happy New Year you all

OK, I worked it out for myself but there must be an easier way. I wanted to do this:

Change a keyword from broad to exact in powerposting e.g.

red widgets ** 2.0 ** http.//domain.com/?myid=GGL1234&gtse=Goog&gtkw={keyword}

to

[red widgets] ** 2.0 ** http.//domain.com/?myid=GGL1234&gtse=Goog&gtkw={keyword}

How-To
  1. I first saved the existing keyword and CPC entry in a Notepad doc as a backup.
  2. I cut out the dynamic keyword insertion part of the URL.
  3. I changed the keyword to exact and Saved the ad group.
  4. I clicked Edit CPCs/URLs and reopened the keyword and pasted back the dynamic keyword insertion snippet I had cut out before.
  5. I Saved it and the change was accepted.

Just thinking, isn't this all a bit pointless?

If your ad is directed at an [exact match] then there's no point in using a dynamic {keyword} term in the url, even if it is possible.

You know that the ad will only show when [exact term] is searched for, so you might as well type &keyword=exact-term?

Hi AWA and others,

I checked again and they are missing again. Slightly different as what I thought earlier: it's not connected to "keyword" so I'll start a new topic: [webmasterworld.com...]

Hi HitProf,

I left a tip, which I hope will solve your issue, in the other thread:
