Can negative keywords be applied to an entire adgroup?

If so, how?

I guess the title kind of sums it up. I am attempting to "powerpost" for the first time, and I would like to use negative keywords for all 750 phrases that I posted.

How would this be done?

Not sure I follow you. Negative keywords by nature affect an entire Ad Group. Do mean an entire Campaign?

I guess I'm not real sure where you would enter them.

The same place you ad your keywords. Just put -keyword instead of a keyword.

example:
fuzzy widget
-round
-red

If someone searched for a round or red fuzzy widget, the ad won't appear.

Hmmm...I guess that's what I was afraid of. I was hoping to use a "negative" on words like "free" for all words in my group. Is that possible?

Let's go back to the creation of a campaign, so that you can follow, and we know we're talking about the same thing.

The first step is to create the ad.
The next step is to enter your keywords you want to bid on into the box:

keyword a
keyword b
keyword c
keyword d
-free
-crack
-keygen

The above entry will not show keywords "a" through "d" for any query that includes any of the negative terms: free, crack, or keygen.

Thank you very much for the clarification MB. I think I have it right now.

I pumped to be putting up my first 1000+ keyword campaign.

Wish me luck. :)

Best wishes Stuntdubl. Just keep in mind that you should also include the highly relevant terms in quotes (") and also once in square brackets ([]). This will get higher click-through rates for those terms and push your ad higher up.

I generally use this list -

blue widgets
"blue widgets"
[blue widgets]

This way exact search for blue widgets goes to the 3rd ad-group. For others, if blue widget was in exactly this order as in "blue widget manufacturer", the 2nd ad group gets credit and for others, the 1st group gets credit. This way I can more easily identify the searching pattern.

Also, the CTR for the 3rd group is geenrally much higher. At times I even switch off the 1st category if there is a very broad matching.
