Adword ad in premium positions

Changes for me are working

It looks like if you use the [] match, and your click through rate is above 5%, google will move your adword listing to the top of the premium listings for free. Anyone else seeing this?

Finally starting to get a hold on this adword thing - still would love to spend more money but can't thanks to broadmatch.

We also have this experience but it does not seem to be consistent. It looks like they are testing it.

We got demoted out of the premium slots (for some strange reason) two weeks ago.

Our CTR was greater than 10%, and we had no competition for the keyword involved.

I hope that G has retured to the old formula for promotion...sounds like this might be the case!

Yes it's happening for me also and going in and out of premium.

Still not working for us with a CTR of 7% and increased our max cost per click to $3.

Under the old system we would have been promoted to a premium slot with these stats.

Anthing that has a CTR of 5% should be featured, especially with the handicap on how google displays their ads like banners on google.com. It would be nice if google had some logic with adwords - but as with anything with google, illogical thoughts rule.

I wish that Google would display the 1st 2 adwords results like OV does, without the coloring...with just a heading that says "Sponsor Results"

I don't think the bid price has much to do with the equation as long as your CTR will still bump you up to the top slot. I have several terms in the Premium slots and have no max CPC's above 15 cents. In fact, most of them are 5 to 7 cent terms that are up North.

paulewing:

What is your CTR on those terms? We are trying to figure out what is needed to get promoted.

Thanks

An example group that does well most times:

Created first week of Oct.
Max CPC 10 cents
Average CPC 7 to 10 cents
This Month CTR 6% to 25%
All Time CTR 4% to 14%

This is leading me to think that CTR is probably the most important factor. I have one term in the group that is the only ad for the term, but doesn't seem to be getting kicked north. It currently has an All Time CTR of 3.9% but in the last week a 7.3%. It looks like an All Time CTR above 5% may be a factor form looking at my current results.

I'm also thinking that if you are the only ad that shows up for a KW, you are not eligible to get promoted. This seems to be the case with us.

This isn't true. I have several keywords that have been promoted to the top spot with no competition.

They all have fairly high CTR's though.

I agree - as long as you have a high CTR, even if you are alone, you can get the top spot.

High CTR sure helps, but it is tough against broad match. I wish the concept of broad match never existed. =)

Actually I prefer not to be in the premium spot because I am seeing better CTR when the ad is anywhere in the right margin.

Does anyone know what CTR Google uses to determine promotion: Ad Group CTR or Campaign CTR?

I think it's keyword level but I would appriciate it if AWA could give some clarity about what is going on here...

Thanks Robsp.

It would be nice if Adwords Advisor could shed some light on this issue.

I've been obsessing over this (my boss is on my case!) for nearly 3 weeks since we got demoted for no apparent reason. Because of this our sales have dropped.

Robsp & cayenne, I actually did comment on this one some time ago, in another thread. This topic has a life of its own, and comes up with real regularity. ;)

Briefly, AdWords ads can certainly be 'promoted' from the right side to the former Premium spots. The factors considered are, as always, both CPC and CTR. However, the exact algorithm that causes ads to be promoted is not published. I suspect the reasons for this are obvious to most.

And, as noted by many in this forum, the algorithm has been changed recently. In my previous post, I concluded by saying that the algo will most likely continue to be fine-tuned through the end of the year, when the Premium Sponsorship program will end.

At that point, I suspect that more information will be made available. However I do not anticipate the complete algorithm to be announced in detail.

cayenne, I'm sorry your boss is on your case about this. Pehaps have him or her read this post, so they will understand that you are doing your best - but dealing with variables that are not within an advertiser's precise control.
