Adwords sold on CPM basis

Is it true?

We have a local internet service provider claiming they have made a deal with Google to sell Adwords on a CPM basis.

As far as I know to this moment, the premium sponsorship is based on CPM, but Adwords advertisers are only charged for the actural clicks of the ads, never head of anyone paying by impressions. Is this a new development with Google advertising program?

Anybody know something about this?

I have been contacted at various times by companies who 'guarantee' you will be in the top 3 spots on Google Adwords and pay less than current campaign costs. When I have challenged them as to how this can be without them actually losing money, they say they can't tell me otherwise everyone would be doing it.
I have spoken to Google about these companies and although they are obviously unable to advise one way or the other whether I should take them up on their offers, they have always asked me to send any emails/correspondence on for them to have a look at.

I get these offers all the time. I consider them
spam and delete them. Now only if I could get a spam filter for my telephone :)

I would ask them to verify that. Or give you a contact at Google so you can follow it up. Sounds extreeemmly dodgy..

Absolute rubbish.

CPM on Google is no longer being sold. From the end of the year it is Adwords on CPC and nothing more.

There has been some talk about spyware that inserts its clients results in G, something like:

user types "keyword" in the G search box, spyware inserts something like +"FooBar Client 235656" and suddenly the number one results is Joe's Widget Shop, PR 0, and of course it that happens that Joe's is Client #235656 of "Keywords Guarantees R Us".

Is that official?

The local ISP I mentioned is a well extablished company who is also one of the top 3 hosting service provider here in our country. They seemed to be pretty confident about the deal with Google and they even invited us to a news briefing which was said would be attended by representatives from Google. If it is not true, then what a big fat lie they're telling!

Extract from the reply I received from Google:

"Regarding their claims that they do not charge you on a CPC basis, this is correct as you only pay a monthly charge. However, although they ask you to pay a fixed monthly fee, they do pay us on a CPC basis as normal via credit card. I imagine that they make money only if their customers don't spend more than the fixed fee each month otherwise they will have to foot the bill for any additional costs that your account accumulates in that month. You should note that every company that uses Google AdWords must pay for their clicks on a CPC basis."

That would be easy for a company to set up. They take 10% off the top, then apply the remaining 90% of your money to a Google account, and then set daily limits based on that amount. They can't lose money, but your ad might not run the entire month.

The question is if your ad is continuously shown throughout the month, then they could definately lose money.

Google at one time had cost per impression ads, then changed to Adwords CPC. I have a rather low CTR (I try to write creatives that will discourage "window shopping" and get a higher conversion rate.
I don't remember the details, but I do remember paying for some ads based on impression before Adwords started.
