Hi, wonder if you can help! I have been running my google ads a few weeks now but i havent done much with my keywords. They are all braod terms that are in so i want to know how many keywords I should be using and whether or not to bother using the broad, exact, negative features? Any ideas would be a great help!

Thanks

Are you happy with your results? If what you set up is working then great, but my experience is that you need to tweak. If some are not working, try some others.

I am one month into my program and forced myself to wait at least two weeks before I made some changes. Given what I see as the results of the new keywords, I wish I had not waited.

Well how does one know if the results are really on the face of it good? But its these features that allow you to tweak keywords that I'm not sure on! Have you used them?

What I did not realize was I needed to add plurals for my keywords. I had “hand widget” with a decent CTR (3.0). I added “hand widgets” and that is now showing a CTR of 3.5.

My keywords are targeted to the point that the phrase matching/exact/negative tools aren’t used yet.

There are three easy ways to figure out which negative keywords you should use.

First, look at your referrer logs to see what terms people were searching for and found your site on, then see which one's aren't relevant, and add the most used keywords which aren't related to your site.

The second is to do a search on Google. Look at the top 30 sites for that keyword, see which one's aren't relevant, and add those appropriate keywords.

The last one is wordtracker. Search on your broad keyword, and make a list of all the highly used terms that don't fit your model.

By using negative keywords properly, you can really get a jump on some competition as if your ads are only relevant on a Google search, your CTR will be higher than your competition who's not using them, thus not only drivng your ad higher in the listing, but also driving your CPC down.
