Ok, I've been using googles desktop tool to check content on my site. The way that I do it is I visit the top 20 sites for a particular keyword, or phrase also my own site, then I use googles desktop tool to search my own computer and see how well my site does against the top sites. I figure this will show me how well my SEO work, and content plays against the bigger sites. Of course this does not factor in backlinks and link quality, but I think it gives me an idea of how well, or bad I might be doing in Google for SEO... It appears my site does pretty good for terms such as "[mod note: a keyword that was just snipped]" but I'm not even in the top 100 in Google, so evidentaly I need HUGE numbers of incoming links, or so in theory thats what I figure.

Don't know, it was just an idea. Anyone think this might be a useful tool? Or is it possible that the algorithm used to find stuff on the desktop may be different than the one used on the web, in more ways that link quality?

It is an interesting concept. Theoretically it might allow you to isolate some factors and run a/b tests. Unfortunately these factors are a small percentage of the current algo. Spend more time getting links and you'll be happier.

The algorythms are different between googlebots and the PR.
The toolbar is also a very useful marketing tool, within it you will find Google Alerts, if you insert your keywords for everyday searches, then each morning I come down to e mails from Google on my chosen subject. These alerts are from World Wide Media, some are of no use, others are little gems, if I see an article that interests me, I'll e-mail the writer or the editor and make my points known. We have had our URL published loads of times, we have even had National TV in our offices and we went out on the 6pm News, the phones were busy the next day.

I've recently found that it doesn't work anyways. It was just an idea, and after further testing it shows that pages you visit more often come up with higher results, so the google desktop tool is useful for little more than what it was designed for :-P
