Ok, so I had this idea, and it seems to be working. One way that I check if the SEO work on my site is up to par with other sites at the top of Google for similar key phrases is I've downloaded the Google desktop search. I visit every page in the top 20 for a particular key phrase, and my own. Then I use the desktop search on my own computer for relevancy... If my site comes up in the top I think I'm good, if not I work on it until it does. Then I know that my rankings, or lack of are based on lack of link quality, not lack of SEO knowledge.

Has anyone else done this? Do you think it's really working for me, or would you say I'm louring myself into a false sense of security?

According to the data I've collected from doing this my site [archmaille.com ]is up to par with the top 10 sites for the term "sterling silver jewelry" but doesn't rank in the top ten... so evidentally I've got TONS of link work to do.
