I am using Windows 98, Internet Explorer 6.
I have recently installed Norton Internet Security
and Ad-Aware. I don't know if these installations may have affected anything.
I'd appreciate any help anyone might be able to give me. Thanks in advance:)
When I check c:\windows\system, the file appears to be there.
The only thing I tried with the registry is to run regclean and windows registry checker. After this I haven't a clue about the registry.
I also tried removing all cookies and this didn't work.
Does anyone know if Ad-Aware or Norton Internet Security could have messed me up? This happened after installation of these programs.
I want my TOOLBAR back!! :(
Thus it being Windows 98 I would do a start, shutdown, and restart in MS Dos mode.
From there do:
C:\>scanreg /restore
Pick a day or 2 before the toolbar stopped working and restore.
Be aware you will lose some software registry settings. ie: Norton Internet Security and Ad-Aware.
I would then rename the windows\system\googlenav0.dll to a .old or something and then try to reinstall the Google bar.
That I would think should do the trick. Or at least get us more info.
Hope this helps.
I did what you recommended.
I did a start, shutdown, and restart in MS Dos mode.
From there:
C:\>scanreg /restore
I picked a day or 2 before the toolbar stopped working and restored.
I renamed the windows\system\googlenav0.dll to .old
I didn't even need to reinstall the toolbar. When I opened my browser it was there.
I then tried to uninstall Norton Internet Security. It would not uninstall because it said the program was not on my system. Then I went to install Norton Internet Security from the cd. I got to the process where it detected the 2001 version of Norton Antivirus on my pc and said it would uninstall this version before installing the 2002 version. Then I had to reboot my system. After the reboot, I opened Internet Explorer and the Google Toolbar was gone again. I didn't continue with the Norton installation, because I didn't know what was causing this problem. Any ideas? What should I do now????
Now once again this is only what I would do...hopefully this helps.
C:\>scanreg /restore
Restore from yesterday. Once you have restored when you go into the add / remove programs, Norton Internet Security and Ad-Aware should both be in there. Lets try and uninstall Norton, reboot, and then check your Google bar to see if it is back. If you are back then I would say Norton Internet Security is loading something up that is killing the bar. I don't think it is Norton Anti-Virus as I run this all on all my computers / clients and the Google bar works fine.
If that doesn't work lets see if we can figure it out for you.
Good Luck.
Now what. I'd like to have the toolbar and be able to use the Norton stuff. Very strange.
Thanks
It sounds like you may have a static vxd hanging around that is causing your problem.
I would try and run msconfig and take a look at what you have starting up when the computer boots. Try and remove all the check marks except for system tray and see if this clears some or all of your problems.
If you can run your google bar with all these things unchecked then you know that you have a problem with something in your startup.
I hope this gets you pointed in the right direction.
I also tried the .exe version of Google Toolbar installation and couldn't install.
I still get the same message about the GoogleNav0.dll.
No tinybar
I renamed the windows\system\googlenav0.dll to .oldI didn't even need to reinstall the toolbar. When I opened my browser it was there.
Am I the only one seeing this... try renaming the .dll file back to it's original name and rebooting, or, finish the last step that was suggested (re-installing the google bar).
Didn't work
I've deleted the googlenav0.dll file too, and noticed that the installer puts it back. Then I get the message that it's not there.
I've sent this discussion to GOOGLE TOOLBAR, "how to report a problem". Hopefully there's a real person there who'll respond to this issue.
