niave question i know, but if i go to view->toolbars and untick google, does that turn it off? I mean, would doing that stop my browser sending info to google?
any ideas?

The key is whether or not you have "advanced features" tuned on. If you want to stop sending info to Google, open the menu on the toolbar, go to "privacy information" and there is a "disable advanced features" button, and an ENABLED/DISABLED flag

When you turn it off, I've never detected it trying to connect at all. I looked extensively.

thanks guys - so brett you reckon that just going to view->toolbar etc will disable its sending information? :)
