I came across a site with a good Alexa rating (14,000) and it has 2688 inbound links. PR is 0. How could this be?

designhaus - why was getting rid of the PR indicator the best thing you've done?

Most of the time it makes people biased, PR doesn't mean much anymore. You can have a crappy site with high (bought) PR. Or you can have a great content site with lower PR.

jsnively - getting rid of the PR indicator has allowed me to get rid of this notion that Google is king and we have to bow down to their page rank algo.

Its reminded me that their are users that visit my sites and they are the most important part of my site. It has also forced me into looking into new ways of traffic generation and now every time there is another google update I am not at their mercy anymore.

My brand and customers are what is important now. SEO is just a small part of the marketing process.
